Finding Pleasure in the Mundane

Do you realize that your body is capable of experiencing pleasure every day?

Think about your morning rituals: Shower. Shave. Put on makeup. Brush your hair.

When we do the same thing every day, it becomes a mindless routine. You might be thinking about the meeting you have later that afternoon, or the errands that you need to run after work, or you might be replaying a conversation that you had with someone the night before. With so many thoughts running through our heads, we become disconnected from the sensations that our bodies are feeling. It's no wonder that so many of us start to feel dullness slowly creep into our sex lives!

So how do you reconnect with yourself in order to feel pleasure to your full capacity? I like to practice something that I call "erotic meditation".

Erotic meditation may sound daunting, but it is something that you can do for a few minutes at a time. I suggest starting with your post-shower moisturizing routine. Instead of haphazardly slathering lotion on your limbs, I invite you to slow down, and focus on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nostrils for 4-5 seconds, and then slowly exhale through your mouth at the same pace. As you apply your lotion, caress your skin the way that you would want a lover to touch your body. While staying connected your breath, take note of how your hands feel as they squeeze every curve of your limbs. Observe how your muscles feel as they receive the focused energy from your self massage. Rub your hands together and savor how your fingers glide between the others. Notice every sensation that you are experiencing, and breathe deeply into every movement.

Receiving pleasure takes practice, and that is a practice worth doing every day. The more often can connect with yourself, the more often your body can delight in the sensuality that exists all around you.
